Tree bees in a bird house? #874003

Asked June 20, 2024, 7:38 PM EDT

Hi - I have what appear to be European tree bumblebees nesting in a birdhouse. The hive began being active in April, went quiet for a few recent weeks and now is humming (so loud I can hear it inside my house) again. What shall I do? Want to keep pollinators happy for now and reclaim my birdhouse when they are finished w it.

Expert Response

Hi Andrea,
You may let the bumble bees continue to live in the birdhouse for this season. They will abandon the nest in the fall at which point in time, simply clean it for next season's birds.

Here's more information from the Xerces Society, "Bumble Bee Conservation", which will provide you with more information about the lifecycle and habitat needs for bumble bees.

Enjoy your summer hosting bumble bees.
