How do i combat a colony of Spotted Lantern flies?

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

Spotted Lanternflies don't need treatment in home landscapes, as they do not pose a serious threat to garden plants. We see the nymphs in your photo clustered on what looks like grape leaves (or its invasive cousin, Porcelainberry, though it looks more like grape). If you are growing grapes for harvest, it might be worth covering the plant with insect mesh netting, but otherwise, no insecticide use is recommended, nor would it work very well if using a low-toxicity spray that poses less risk of harm to pollinators and other insects (since no insecticide will be specific to SLF only).
