Need assistance identifying a small very dark grass #873976

Asked June 20, 2024, 4:26 PM EDT

Hello, I am seeking help identifying an interesting small grass I found on disturbed sandy soil in Hudson. The flowering culm is 16 inches tall; the inflorescence and the leaves are almost black. The crown and leaves are quite small as shown on the attached pictures. We are planting our yard in all native plants (except for the lawn), and this looked like an interesting specimen to include. I would like to identify the grass so I can learn more.

Hi Ken,

I do not know what this grass is--and I feel obligated to remind you to make sure you know the local laws related to harvesting and relocating plants.  Most often, you cannot remove plants from parks.  A great resource that has some natives and details soil types including sand can be reviewed here: https://www.clevelandmetroparks.com/getmedia/420fa064-156d-4ec2-a35a-39663c8d720a/2017NR02_Landscaping-for-Biodiversity.pdf.ashx  and here is a list of nurseries that provide native plants, https://treeselector-clevelandmetroparks.com/nurseries.  I hope this helps you find plants for your native landscaping!
