These trees were planted 2.5 years ago in my front yard. One tree is thriving, with good growth and very green leaves. The other tree has smaller, sparser leaves, which have a yellow-ish tinge, and smaller, sparser flowers. The tree that is NOT thriving receives more sun, and is near a rather large maple tree. I don't see evidence of pests on the tree that is not thriving. My landscaper suggested a tree spike but I have not acted on that suggestion. Any thoughts about I I might proceed?

Thank you for your question and from the pictures I can see your second tree does appear to have a problem. I see a tree that is trying it's best to hang on and be successful, but something is working against it.
Based on your description and what I am seeing, I would recommend you call a local ASA Certified arborist and make an appointment for them to come out and evaluate your dogwood. A close up evaluation is called for before the problem with your tree gets much worse. They will provide you with their professional diagnostic insight and give you their recommended plan of action for your tree.
