Rose Bush and sawflies #873961

Asked June 20, 2024, 3:20 PM EDT

I’ve reached out to your department in the past and you have been extremely helpful. I have a question and was wondering if you could help me. I’m having an issue with sawflies on my very well established rose bushes and I’m worried they’re not going to live. Do you have any recommendations? I do have dogs so I was hoping a more “safe” solution (if there is one).

Expert Response

You do have options. Here is information on sawflies from the University of Wisconsin. There is good information about sawflies and some photos which may help you to identify what is on your roses.

"Although sawflies may look like caterpillars or slugs, since they are not, it makes a difference in what chemical are effective against them – for example, BT or Bacillus thurningiensis only works against true caterpillars and is ineffective on sawfly larvae – so be sure to read the label before using any insecticide. [ALWAYS FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS WHENEVER USING CHEMICALS]  Insecticidal soaps, neem oil, and many synthetic insecticides can be used to control sawflies. Apply insecticides only when larvae are actually present."
