Maple leaves turning fall colors already. #873942

Asked June 20, 2024, 2:16 PM EDT

I have 2 small maples that we planted about 2 years ago. The upper leaves on both of them turned yellow/orange almost right away when they budded, and now most of the leaves on one of them are yellow/orange. I have read that leaves change colors when the tree is stressed and lots of advice for drought and underwatering. But we have a lot of clay in our soil and I'm wondering if the problem is too much water with our recent rainy weather. These are relatively small trees and we haven't had the predicted growth spurts that we expected. Is there anything I can do about too much water?

Expert Response

Not much can be done about overwatering from rain except to turn off any automated watering.
The good news is the over abundant rain seems to be ending. Let’s hope we don’t have a July and August with no rain. Clay soil can be tricky, be sure to check if the soil is dry at a depth of 2 inches before watering.
