Natural Grasses and Flowers #873924

Asked June 20, 2024, 1:08 PM EDT

I'm looking for a little direction on grass and flower selection in the wayne county area. We completed a community clean up where we pulled of 50 tons of trashed. I don't want to leave this area bare, I'm looking for a cost effective solution that lines up with the environment. In short we are looking for -plant selection -seed bank solutions -willing to work with MSU if they have a program for rehabbing polluted lands ect.

Expert Response

Hello!

Congrats on completing a 50 ton trash pick up on this property!

For the most positive environmental impact, we recommend using native Michigan plant species. How big of an area is it? Also, how is the land intended to be used?

The most cost effective native plant solution would be to use seed and not plugs. The two Michigan Native Seed Companies that I am aware of is:

Michigan Wildflower Farm

As for what species would work best in your circumstance, I would reach out to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes Energy's Brownfield Redevelopment team: https://www.michigan.gov/egle/about/organization/remediation-and-redevelopment/brownfields

I will also reach out to a few individuals to see if they have more information on this subject. Can you please email me, so that I can follow up? <personal data hidden>

Best,
