New backyard tree #873904

Asked June 20, 2024, 10:45 AM EDT

Hello, a tree was recently planted in my backyard by the builder of our house. I am unsure what type of tree it is but I know that a tree has already died in that location before. This new tree was planted about 2.5 weeks ago and I noticed the leaves are starting to shrivel up and fall off. Since the area is windy, I have anchored it. I have also been deligent about watering the new tree, watering every day it doesn't rain. The ground around the tree has stayed pretty wet this spring. Do you have suggestions on how I could get this tree to live? Thank you!

Expert Response

It is an elm, either a Siberian elm or a resistant American elm tree. A Siberian elm seems more likely because of cost. It is also a large tree, usually smaller trees are transplanted but it could be bigger because everything seems to be growing faster because of all the rain. Transplant shock is very normal and therefore some wilt and leaf loss is expected. Be sure to check soil moisture levels between waterings and let the soil dry out a bit if it’s soggy. Damp soil is best for your tree.
