chesnut chorosis? #873887

Asked June 20, 2024, 8:51 AM EDT

Hi I have 6 3rd yr. pure strain American chesnut saplings about 3-4' tall replanted this spring in buckets (with holes drilled in the bottoms) after spending their winter planted in the garden. I put some progrow fertilizer 5-3-4 on them and a couple are looking quite yellowed. One appears to be starting to turn. I have photos attached. The leaves of the more yellow ones now have brown spots as well. I don't think they have been over watered. Please advise. Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi Kathy,

I consulted with the head faculty member of the Plant Diagnostic Clinic at UVM. She thinks that the trees just need more time for the fertilizer to be effective. She doesn't think it's a disease. She suggested that the trees would be better off in the ground than in pots. If you do put them back in the ground, they will not need more fertilizer. The trees need 1 inch of water per week. If they continue to yellow, there may be a root issue. Please contact us again, if you need to. Also, I have included a link on Growing Chestnut Trees, for your information.
