Trees for dust break #873883

Asked June 20, 2024, 8:14 AM EDT

I live in an area where there's some wind, but there's a lot of dust in that wind. And I'd like to try and plant a row of trees to kind of break up the flatness and dust. I'm also hoping that it will help create a a microclimate where it doesn't freeze quite as hard. But this area I'd like to plant it can flood and has flooded. And so I'm wanting advice on what you would recommend to plant. I live between Chiloquin and Sprague river, and our weather tends to be 5 to ten degrees colder than Chiloquin, where sometimes Sprague.

Hi, and thanks for your question! Two of my colleagues created this guide for folks seeking to establish hedgerows: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/pub/em8721
This publication gives lots of ideas and considerations, as well as plant lists- including one for arid areas. The one thing that is not covered is selections for your particular climate- you'll want to select plants hardy to USDA zone 5.  Technically, the area is considered zone 6, but Chiloquin and sprague river folks should try zone 5 for best results. you can put a plant name and USDA hardiness zone in google, this should be a good starting place. Keep in mind that different cultivars might have different hardiness. For instance, one maple might be hardy to zone 5 while another is hardy only to zone 7, etc.
If you have additional questions after checking out this publication, please let me know, I am happy to help! Sincerely, Nicole
