Colorado blue spruce die back #873870

Asked June 19, 2024, 10:40 PM EDT

Good evening, I have a question about my young Colorado Blue spruce. I planted it in spring of 2021 and it has nearly doubled in size since then. About 7-10 days ago, the top leader branch wilted, and dried up. The wilting has since been spreading downward to other branches. All the branches below the wilting/die back appear completely healthy. I'm concerned that the wilting will progressively spread down the tree and kill it entirely, so I'm curious if you have any thoughts of what this might be and how I can stop the progression. Thanks in advance!

Hi Brycen,

I'm sorry to hear about your tree!  Based on what I can see in your photos and your description, I suspect you are dealing with White Pine Weevils.  These insects develop as larvae in the terminal shoot of spruce trees (and some other conifers).  They only affect the top of the tree, so the damage is primarily aesthetic.  You can train a new leader for the spruce by selecting one of the likely several that will begin growing from the branches beneath the dead stem and pinching out the others.

To make sure your new leader isn't affected, you can consider insecticide treatments in subsequent springs.

Information about the life history of this insect and control is summarized in this CSU Fact Sheet: https://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/white-pine-weevil-5-606/

I hope this is helpful!

Cordially,

John
