Austrian Pine pruning question #873850

Asked June 19, 2024, 7:57 PM EDT

I have a young Austrian Pine, about 24" tall, and I'm wondering about those low branches. Especially that larger one, you can see on the right side, it's quite long. Should those small, very low ones AND that larger one be pruned off eventually? Thanks!

Expert Response

Hello,
Pines are not usually pruned, and this one does not need it at this point.  Sometimes candles are pruned to regulate growth of the tree, but again, at this point, I do not think pruning is necessary. Here is more information on pruning evergreens: https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/pruning-evergreens/ You also want to limit wounds on a tree when the weather is hot and humid due to risk of infections.  Just make sure the tree is watered at the base and limit needle wetting whenever possible- these pines are susceptible to several fungal diseases. With the heat we are experiencing, plants need to be watered more frequently, as well.
