RE: Large Yellow Underwing Moth - Question 6 19 2024 #873840
Asked June 19, 2024, 6:49 PM EDT
In the last few days we have found SIX of these moths IN our house. I have lived in this house for twenty years and never seen this before. My IPhone identified it. I read that its larvae becomes a cutworm on plants outside. I can fine nothing saying it eats cloth like other moths. I do not know where these are coming from. One was on a t-shirt in my closet, one on a drape I had washed in the bathroom, one on the carpet in the master bedroom between a cardboard box and a piece of furniture and the other three in the master bathroom.
I have no idea where they are coming from. None of my windows have been open. Because I don't know where they are coming from I don't know how to eradicate them except one by one as I find them. Any ideas?

Expert Response
Are there any plants within the house (houseplants or other)? It does appear to be the large yellow underwing moth, Noctua pronuba. That particular species I believe has quite a host range, but primarily it is an agricultural pest.
