Colorado Blue Spruce with 3 Leaders #873832

Asked June 19, 2024, 5:51 PM EDT

We purchased a 8-9 ft. Colorado Blue Spruce this spring. We should have taken a closer look, but it just looked nice and full. It wasn’t until we had it in the ground that I realized it had two codominant trunks. I also noticed later that there is a third fairly large leader coming off the second. This tree was not cheap and I would like it to survive and thrive. The base trunk is about 5.5” diameter, the first leader is 3.5”, the second is roughly 3” and the third (emerging from the 2nd) is about 1”. I’ve attached two photos of the main divergence and 1 of the smaller. I’m worried the codominant trunk is now too large to safely remove from the tree.

Hello Amanda,

Thank you for you message. From the look of the pictures the co-dominant trunks are definitely an issue. Unfortunately, I am not sure on what to advise. Your best bet would be to contact SavATree for their expert advise on removal and pruning. They can be reached at <personal data hidden>. Another great resource would be Kamie Long who is our state forester her phone number is <personal data hidden> x3. I hope this helps!

Best Regards,
