Death of Maple tree #873830

Asked June 19, 2024, 5:32 PM EDT

Hello, We've had a Maple tree in our backyard in Coon Rapids ever since we moved in 30 years ago. I am not sure what type it was. But it was a rather tall tree. Last year it was fine, but after this past winter it looked like it tried to leaf out, but the buds just stopped and died. I saw a smaller tree, but it took looked like a Maple and was also dead about a mile from our house. Is there a disease or insect killing these maples? I am aware of the emerald ash borer and have had 6 ash trees removed because of that insect. Could this be related somehow? Thanks.

Expert Response

Thankfully, no maple pests have been reported.EAB and DED have been devastating.
Drought may have killed the young maple in the neighborhood or lawn mower damage to the trunk. I don’t think it’s problems are related to your maple.
I am sorry your tree died. They take a long time to grow into a shade tree and it really leaves a hole when they die.
It is often a root problem  that kills them, especially when there isn’t anything obvious. The plant disease clinic can provide a diagnosis, although there is a fee.
