WBO in house beam: possibly golden buprestid beetle #873821

Asked June 19, 2024, 4:22 PM EDT

Discovered pencil eraser sized holes in a beam in our cabin, with dust piles beneath. About ten to twelve holes, discovered in June 2024. I recall finding two dead beetles in the same area, green, over the winter and wondering where they could have come from. The home is now enclosed, and beam was painted about two years ago. Prior to that the structure was open for a period, and an unsealed “shop”. From memory, the beetles may have appeared to look like the golden buprestid, but memory could be off. Home is located in the McKenzie River, near Vida.

Expert Response

Hi Molly and thanks for your question about the holes in your cabin beam. Without sighting the critters, it would be hard to make a diagnosis, but the active sawdust pile tells me something is working away. I would call an exterminator to have a look and see if you can find one of the bugs doing the damage. If you find one of the bugs crawling around we will be able to identify it for you.

In the meantime, I'll attach a website which talks about carpenter ants and termites. Also, at the very bottom is a link to a page telling you how to hire a pest control company.

Good luck with your cabin issue,
