Should I use shredded or pine bark mulch for weed control in large area where clay soil is somewhat alkaline and where I am attempting to grow thuja Green Giant arbor vitae, redbuds and native wildflowers? Thank you for your help.

I consulted a colleague who has done research with mulch and they said either would be fine.
