dwarf grafted apple trees - having trouble growing them #873794

Asked June 19, 2024, 2:05 PM EDT

I have been trying to grow a few unusual varieties of grafted dwarf apple trees but with limited success. Take a look at the photos attached.

Information:
I live in central Michigan with average sandy/dirty soil.

Dwarf tree varieties include:
Maidens Blush, Neidzwetzkyana, Pink pearl, Buford red, Grimes golden, Ginger gold, etc.

• I have been trying to grow them for three years (and added some replacements) and have been learning by trial/error, which isn’t the best way to learn. I have lost 6 trees and the current ones still are not growing leaves that are consistently helping them to grow into healthy trees.
• I sprayed the trees with a dormant copper spray earlier this season before the leaves developed.
• I have been using a spray called Bonide Fruit Tree and Plant Guard to try to deal with the problem with the leaves (assuming fungus and insects).
• I lightly fertilized around the trees this spring and have been watering them every 4-5 days, although I went away a week a couple times in early May without watering.

The trees are still not flourishing and are having problems. I just applied some Bonide Systemic Insect control to see if that helps. It appears to me that I may have a spider mite problem (see the small cobwebs on and around many of the leaves). But that doesn’t probably answer the curling of the leaves and some of the bites.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Thanks!

Good morning. I think you have an insect eating those trees. Do you see any caterpillars? That looks like obliquebanded leaf roller with the webbing? Do you see green larvae with a black head capsule? I have heard there is an outbreak of spongy moth (formerly known as gypsy moth), could this be an issue in your area? However, I am surprised trees are dying from insect pests unless they are eating off all of the leaves, then the trees could potentially be dying.  Spider mites do not have webbing like that.

It sounds like you are watering and fertilizing correctly. See if you can find caterpillars out there and send me a picture. Thank you.
