Hello Jessica,
Box elder, (Acer negundo) is an easily grown tree, tolerant of various soil conditions. Read more here: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=268552&isprofile=0&
It is susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew and insect attacks, like the box elder beetle. Neither would be a serious problem for the plant. Unfortunately, it is difficult to identify the white spots on the leaves, which may be powdery mildew, from the picture. Diseases of plants are usually species specific and will not affect plants of different species.
In order to have a more thorough diagnosis, send the pictures/sample to MSU Extension’s Diagnostic Lab at: https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/
A certified arborist will be able to assess the tree. To find and arborist in your area, go to www.treesaregood.org, the website of the International Society of Arboriculture.
