pruning redbud tree #873720

Asked June 18, 2024, 8:55 PM EDT

I received a redbut thru the Tree Trust, unexpectedly a clump which I did't want. It has gotten much larger, taller, broader than anticipated and I can't walk under it. Can I just continue to cut of branches that are getting so heavy they hang far down? Or should I cut one of the main trunks all the way to the ground maybe so I only have one or 2 trees in the clump. There are now 5! I probably will no matter your answer because it's just become to big. any info appreciated, generally I know this isn't the time to prune but as it gets bigger each branch gets heavier and hangs lower! I don't understand the link to my photos, so may or may not work for you.

Thank you for writing.
The first question is when to prune.
Do it in spring right after flowering or in spring before flowering although in many shrubs, this is to maximize flowering AND prevent disease. https://www.wildflower.org/expert/show.php?id=10193#:~:text=ANSWER%3A,after%20the%20flowers%20have%20finished.  Disease is less a consideration here.

Here are two good guides on how to prune.

First, using a pruning saw, remove the dead branches all the way to the ground.  Resist the urge to take the top part of a branch.
Second, using a pruning saw, remove one of the criss crossing branches all the way to the ground.
Then take a break and get used to the tree.
Third, take off one or two the the oldest tallest, thickest branches all the way to the ground.
I could help you with a photograph after step two, if you can send me an unobstructed view of the plant.
Overall take your time.  You should only remove a third of the plant per year.
