Odd black blight on maple #873713

Our silver.red maple hybrid has been healthy but this year presents black areas on trunk near the ground, small, spotted leaves and shriveled brown areas on leaf tips.. There were very few seeds (helicopters) produced, an oddity. It is perhaps 25 years old, and has always been robustly healthy with stunning, red foliage in fall and beautiful greenery in summer. But not so much right now.
