Velvet Longhorned Beetle or Japanese Cedar? #873711

Asked June 18, 2024, 8:27 PM EDT

Found this one outside my house in Glen Burnie. 1.1-1.3cm long, died shortly after I caught it. I narrowed it down to the above possibilities but I'm no entomologist. Thanks!

Expert Response

There are around 200 species of long-horned beetle (family Cerambycidae) documented in Maryland, and several species look alike. The pictured specimen has traits not present in either of the species you mention, but it does resemble either Twig Pruner (Anelaphus villosus) or Spined Oak Borer (Elaphidion mucronatum). It's hard to see enough detail, but we are leaning towards the latter species as being a better match. The long antennae suggest it's a male. Many species of Cerambycid beetle adults are active at night, and like other insects, can be drawn to night lighting (light porch lights or landscape lighting).
