Summer crush hydrangea bloom color #873702

Asked June 18, 2024, 7:42 PM EDT

2 years ago I planted 2 red summer crush hydrangeas. The first winter deer and/or rabbits chews them down to about 6” but come spring to my delight they bloomed bright red again. This winter the same thing happened. It but appears old wood did not seem to survive The winter. This summer all the growth is new wood. To my chagrin the blooms are green. Some do have a tinge of pink on the tips. What is the problem and can I get them to ever bloom bright red again?

Expert Response

Blooms set last year for this year were eaten off.  If you want to keep your plant alive and have red blooms, you must protect it with fencing from the deer.  Your green blooms may turn more pink but probably not red this year.  This hydrangea is an off shoot of Endless Summer and subject to flower color based on soil.  Please read through this info:https://www.southernliving.com/garden/flowers/summer-crush-hydrangea

So if I fence them in and follow all the instructions given in the web link will blooms return to red next year?

Hopefully the new blooms will be red next year.  As I mentioned, this particular variety of hydrangea is sensitive to soil so it may or may not be red.  The parent plant, Endless Summer, required acidic soil in order to produce blue flowers.
