I drive between Salem and Newberg a lot. I’ve noticed that numerous Hop fields that have previously had Hop strings up and climbing Hops. However this year I’d say that about half the fields have not put up the strings but the plants appear healthy just no place to climb. Is it the market or something else? Just curious. I don’t plan to grow any hops in my garden but I might.

Hi Mike,
I'm unsure since I am unfamiliar with those specific farms in that area and the farmer's plans. Hop acreage has been declining since 2023 with lower craft beer sales and the market taking a slight downturn.
We had a long vacancy without a field crops agent in the Willamette Valley and only recently filled it. If you have follow-up questions about hops, I recommend reaching out to <personal data hidden>
