Sasafras Tree Problem??? #873644

Asked June 18, 2024, 3:30 PM EDT

I several large Sasafras Trees. A couple of them have holes chipped into them at the base, a foot or two above the ground. A long with the holes the bark seems to have gotten loose in places and something is in there. I read about Laurel Wilt, is that in Michigan? Thanks for any suggestions.

Expert Response

Hello William
It would be helpful to have several pictures-
One taken far enough back to see the whole tree
One close up of the holes, clearly focused, with something held next to one(a finger, a pencil) to judge size.
One of the loose bark.

Please try to get clearly focused, well-lighted pictures. These will greatly help our tree expert.

I searched my resources and could not find laurel wilt yet reported in Michigan but, did find a suspected incidence in Indiana, which may, or may not, have been wilt. There are many other issues hat can cause holes and loose bark, so they should not be ignored. I will watch for your updates.
