Lawn disease #873632
Asked June 18, 2024, 2:29 PM EDT
My lawn once beautiful with thick green grass is now filled with spots of blacked grass, yellow spots, some very thin dry areas, and yellow spots inside of straw colored areas. What causes this and how can I treat it to reverse this condition.

Expert Response
Hi Marian - there could be a lot of different causes of these symptoms. A common cause is winter damage. This could be from the lawn going into the winter drought stressed, or turf mites. Here is some information on winter damage: https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-news/what-does-winter-injury-look-your-lawn and https://ag.umass.edu/turf/fact-sheets/whats-wrong-with-my-lawn. You might need to over seed your lawn in order to try and correct this damage. Another thing to do to try and help us determine what the issue is to do a soil test - we can do them here at the Extension Office in Gunnison! I am attaching instructions on how to obtain the sample. https://servitech.com/laboratory-services/soil-testing/soil-sampling-procedures.
