What is the best way to manage this tree in Summit County 8000 feet of altitude? #873617

Asked June 18, 2024, 1:27 PM EDT

This tree is on my property and the lower half of one side has clearly died. Should I simply trim those dead branches off, leave them or cut the entire tree down?

Expert Response

Hi Chris,

I would prune out the dead branches. You will want to cut them out where they meet the trunk but not flush with the trunk. Also if the branch is heavy or over about an inch in diameter, I recommend using the 3 cut method to make sure the branch doesn't tear the bark. This article has diagrams of where to cut the branch at and the 3 cut method: https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/430/430-457/430-457.html

However if 50% or more of the tree is dead or dies, then I would have it removed.
