This tree is on my property and the lower half of one side has clearly died. Should I simply trim those dead branches off, leave them or cut the entire tree down?

Hi Chris,
I would prune out the dead branches. You will want to cut them out where they meet the trunk but not flush with the trunk. Also if the branch is heavy or over about an inch in diameter, I recommend using the 3 cut method to make sure the branch doesn't tear the bark. However if 50% or more of the tree is dead or dies, then I would have it removed.
