sick laurel tree #873612

Asked June 18, 2024, 12:59 PM EDT

Our laurel tree has leaves turning yellow and brown. I looked up the problem online and the site suggested more watering, which I have done. I've also applied a layer of compost to help retain moisture. But the leaves continue to turn brown. I've seen other laurel trees in similar condition. What can I do?

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Brandon.  I don't know if you meant to attach a photo, but it didn't come through.  We really need a photo of the entire tree, as well as a close up of a leaf, both top and bottom.  There are 9 known diseases of laurels, and we cannot diagnose which without pictures.  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-and-disease-descriptions?title=laurel

Thanks for more information!

Brandon:  I'm sorry, but the method you're using to attach the photos isn't working.  We can't read them in .pdf format.  Can you find another way to attach them?  I've answered many, many questions, and no one else has experienced this.  Thanks!

Thank you for trying.  The only photo I can download is the one of the entire tree.  The other two won't load.  We can't diagnose the problem(s) without observing the leaves up close.  I suggest that you submit leaf, stem and soil samples, as well as printed photos to the OSU Plant Clinic for examination:  https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/how-submit-plant-materials

I hope they can help.  Good luck!

The two photos of leaves finally came through (on a different device), but they need to be examined by the Plant Clinic.  The cause may be a soil-borne fungus, often caused by poor drainage.  Good luck!
