Lawn problem #873597

Asked June 18, 2024, 11:46 AM EDT

Our lawn gets watered twice a week. It has been fertilized and compost applied. It isn’t doing well. When we walk on it it feels lumpy.  Let me know if the pictures were attached.

Expert Response

Dear Karen:

Thank you for your question, which has been routed to the CSU Extension Colorado Master Gardener Help Desk. Unfortunately, your photos did not come through; if you would like to try resending them (you can email them directly to us at <personal data hidden>), we would love to take a look. Please send us a wide-angle photo of the entire lawn as well as some closeups of the problem spots. In addition, please help us with a bit more information:

  • how old is the lawn?
  • has your lawn
    been aerated?
  • when did you notice the problem?
  • do you notice the same problem in neighboring lawns?
  • do you notice rabbits, dogs, or ground squirrels on your lawn?
  • you mentioned that the ground feels lumpy when you walk on it. Do you notice any tunneling patterns or furrows in the ground such as would be caused by voles? Most likely, a lumpy lawn is caused by earthworm activity (evidenced by small mounds of soil on the ground surface) and is not a reason for concern.

Based on the information you provided, it sounds like you are taking good care of your lawn. If the only problem is lumpiness, it's likely due to earthworms and can be fixed with aeration and rolling the lawn (see attached). We look forward to hearing back from you with more information. If you prefer, you may call us directly at<personal data hidden> or drop by the Help Desk at 17 N. Spruce Street, Colorado Springs, from 9-12 or 1-4 p. m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Happy gardening,

Heidi V.
