Fungus on Boxwood shrubs #873595

Asked June 18, 2024, 11:44 AM EDT

We have had issues with our boxwoods dying for over a year, We talked to various greenhouses to get advice. Most recently we were told to send a sample of the diseased shrub to the Ohio Extension for a test to determine the exact problem or type of fungus (assuming it is a fungus that has been going around.). How do we go about doing this to find out the problem so it can be treated to possibly save our boxwood shrubs?

Dear Lyndelle,

Your plants are certainly in distress and I will do my best to help.  You requested information about sending samples to The Ohio State Plant Pathology Lab. Here is the link. A simple analysis is $20 . Submissions can be made online or mailed. All of the forms and fee schedules as well as addresses are located at this web address.

Submit Sample | PPDC (osu.edu)

Additionally for your boxwoods, I did find a factsheet on Boxwood diseases from Penn State at this site:

Boxwood Diseases (psu.edu)

And from Ohio State on Boxwood Blight:

Be Alert to Boxwood Blight | BYGL (osu.edu)

And another from OSU:

Boxwood Questions Continue! | The NEWS from OSU Extension in Fairfield County

Hopefully some of this information might prove useful.  Hope you are able to save your boxwoods. Please contact me if you need addtional information.
