Hello, I always wait to put new mulch in my flower beds until my neighbor's tree drops its whirly-birds in the spring. Here it is mid-June and I haven't see any in the tree. I've never had a spring at this St. Paul home without whirly-birds. Do you think there will be any this year or is it time to replenish my mulch. Thanks a lot.

Expert Response
If the neighbor's tree is seed free now, there won't be any seeds this year.
Red and silver maples bear seeds that ripen and drop in spring. Sugar maple, Norway maple, and box elder seeds ripen and drop in autumn.
Red and silver maple flower buds open in late winter or early spring. Because last winter was very mild in the Twin Cities area, maples broke dormancy much earlier than usual. However, cold nights followed which might have killed the flowers.
