Shade plant identification needed #873510

Asked June 17, 2024, 5:49 PM EDT

Online plant ID groups and apps were inconclusive. This has grown slowly and is well shaded and protected in a bed recently converted from lawn to a native plant garden.

Unfortunately, we're not able to identify the plant pictured. Flower traits can be very important to plant ID, but sometimes foliage characteristics can be sufficient if they are distinctive enough. The conditions in which a plant is growing (wet, dry, sunny, shady, acidic soil, alkaline, etc.) can also help to narrow-down a list of possibilities when foliage looks similar between several species. (You do mention shade, but without a group of candidate species to compare it to, it's not quite enough of a defining characteristic.) If you choose not to remove it and let it grow for a while longer (perhaps a few weeks), we can try again if you can send in more photos. It's hard to say how long it would be until it comes into flower...it might be later this year, or if too young and perennial, possibly not until next year or the year after.
