Identifying Tree Disease #873463

Asked June 17, 2024, 2:38 PM EDT

Hello,

Our front yard has a tree that I believe is an ornamental pear (?). It flowers white in spring. At the end of May I removed a branch that was leaking sap and the leaves were brown and shriveled. There are a few more branches now showing similar symptoms. I am needing help identifying what this disease is and what may need to be done about it. Thank you!

Expert Response

Ms. Redman,

Thanks for sending us photos of your tree.

Many pear trees are susceptible to fireblight and there’s a lot of it going around here on the Front Range.

Does what you observe in your home garden look like the diagnostic photos in this Colorado State University Extension research-based  bulletin:  https://extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/garden/02907.pdf ?

Please be very conscientious about disposing of diseased plant material, lest you spread the disease to other susceptible plants!

If you have additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact CSU Extension again.
