It would be very helpful if you could attach pictures of the damage to the bark of your trees as well as a picture of the overall tree(s) as they sit in your landscape.
The problem with outer bark coming off is that the layer immediately underneath it carry moisture and nutrients to the canopy of the tree. If the damage is severe, that portion of the tree fed by the damaged part may not survive. How deep do you estimate the damage is, i.e., does it appear to be merely the outer, dead bark?
