when to transplant rhubarb, old rose bushes, etc. #873449

Asked June 17, 2024, 1:40 PM EDT

When is it okay to split rhubarb and transplant? Also, is it too late to move old rose bushes and peonies?

Expert Response

Hello Budd,

Thanks for reaching out! Early spring is usually the best time to split rhubarb plants and transplant. As soon as the ground can be worked, use a clean, sharp shovel or knife to divide the plant. Replant it immediately, and make sure to water thoroughly throughout the season.

Here is a helpful UMN Extension article (scroll down to the "Dividing" section): https://extension.umn.edu/vegetables/growing-rhubarb

I apologize, but I do not understand your second question -- could you please submit a new question or reply to this one with more information?

Thank you!

Thank you for your reply.  I'm needing to move some of our rhubarb, peonies, and old rugosa roses.  I was wondering if it would be okay to move them now or soon.  They aren't doing so well where they are.  We weren't able to move them earlier as we were laid up with surgeries and cancer doctoring.  Thank you.

Thank you for clarifying! I will share a few helpful links below. As for peonies, it is best to move them in the fall. Try to time it so they have at least 4-6 weeks to re-establish their roots before the ground freezes.

Similarly, with the roses, it is best to move them when they are not flowering. It reduces stress on the plants and will give you the best chance of a successful move.
