Tree Planting #873427

Asked June 17, 2024, 12:08 PM EDT

In the past I've planted trees (deciduous and conifer, mainly barefoot, some potted) in early spring. I am looking at putting in various fairly large trees in the fall (balled and burlapped; 2.5" caliper sugar maples and yellow birch, 8ft white spruce, along with some smaller potted shrubs and trees). My question; is fall timeframe (likely late September early October) a good time to plant trees in Houghton County, or does spring planting offer better results in establishing trees? Site information; inland from Lake Superior so not subject to direct lake winds, planting area is fairly protected from prevailing winter winds.

Houghton County Michigan

Expert Response

Balled and Burlapped trees can be planted in the Spring, Summer, or Fall. Balled and burlapped trees and shrubs are dug with a firm ball of soil around the roots, and held securely in place with burlap, twine, and sometimes a wire basket. If planted properly they are as dependable as a container grown tree. An earlier planting time in September is better than a later date in October. The mid-September time would give the tree six weeks or more before winter to establish themselves. In a typical Houghton winter, the frost does not penetrate the snow covered ground very deep giving the trees additional time to establish.
