Weevil #873404

Asked June 17, 2024, 10:28 AM EDT

Will you please help me try to identify this weevil? The only thing I have learned so far is that it is from the Family Curculionidae. Can you narrow this down a bit, maybe to a subfamily, genus, or even a species. It was spotted on my moth sheet on May 22, in Hudsonville, the size is about 6mm. I no longer have the original specimen so I cannot obtain any further photos. I could submit the original RAW photos in .NEF format if that would help (3 photos, about 20mb each).

Expert Response

The weevils are a large family of insects with 100s of species in Michigan. If you're able to get a copy of Borror and DeLong's Study of Insects, there is a key to weevil subfamilies. While these are pretty good photos, it is difficult to key them out by photo alone and would take a long time for anyone who is not a weevil specialist to identify. We don't have any weevil experts on Ask Extension, and I would recommend trying to submit to Bugguide.net
