Chicago hardy fig in C'bus #873400

Asked June 17, 2024, 9:40 AM EDT

We just bought a 5 ft tall Chicago hardy fig and are excited to plant it. Basic info says it can get to 15' tall and 12' wide, but we are curious to know if a tree planted in the ground in Columbus will be smaller. Do you happen to know the expected size of a mature Chicago hardy planted in the ground in full sun with some wind protection in the Cbus area. Many online accounts suggest that in a climate like ours, we will end up cutting it back significantly each year due to cold-weather die-back, even if we mulch and cover with burlap. Thanks so much for any advice!

Hello Tom,

A Chicago Hardy Fig , planted properly , has the potential to reach 10 to 15 ft tall and 10 to 15 ft wide. The height and width can be controlled by planting in a container , the size of the container will control the growth of height and width.

They like moist, well drained loamy soil with a ph level between 6.0 and 6.5. They are self pollinating . When planted in the ground it may be necessary to insulate the tree against sever winter winds and temperatures. When insulating remember to insulate all the way to the ground to prevent roots from freezing . Figs produce on new growth and will produce even if the top dies .

If planted in a container , they can be moved indoors for the winter . Indoors , insulated , dark or cool basement.. Water them monthly just enough so the roots do not dry out completely.
