Sweetbay #873398

Asked June 17, 2024, 9:26 AM EDT

This is three yr old magnolia. What is occurring on it’s leaves?

Frederick County Maryland

Expert Response

There might be a small amount of leafminer feeding damage, but this is not unusual for Sweetbay (the insect is native) and the injury to the leaves is minor and does not need to be treated. Inconsequential leaf spot infections can also occur on Magnolia foliage, and these similarly do not need to be treated since they don't impact overall tree health.
