Landscape fabric #873381

Asked June 16, 2024, 10:41 PM EDT

Hello, Thanks for all your work! We are installing a mulch border on part of our property that is on a hillside. We do not plan to plant any plants in this section. Is it helpful to put landscape fabric underneath the mulch to help for weed control and maintaining the mulch on the hill? We have seen mixed answers online. Also, is woven or unwoven fabric better for our situation? Thank you.

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

The fabric will definitely help with weeds for a while.  The weeds will grow in the smallest amount of dirt that lands on top of the mulch which cannot be avoided.

If you live in a windy area, the mulch could blow off of the fabric.  I’ve had it happen on farm places.

It is suggested to use woven fabric.  Another trick is to apply a pre-emergent herbicide before putting down the mulch.  Be sure to follow instructions.

I’m sorry to say there is nothing that will totally prevent weeds.  They seem to thrive.
