Help with what is going on with my grass and an evergreen tree #873376

Asked June 16, 2024, 9:34 PM EDT

My grass has splotches in the front and the back of the lawn that are kind of rust colored dead grass. What do you think it is and how do I treat it? My second question is one of my Evergreen trees is losing needles and I don’t know why what do you think it is and how would I treat it?

Expert Response

We believe turf disease of some kind is present, but we can't identify it by viewing the photo.

Although many online resources are designed to help identify turf disease, non-specialists aren't likely to find them useful. Here is an example:

Consequently, for a certain diagnosis, we recommend sending turf samples to the University of Wisconsin Turfgrass Diagnostic Laboratory.

The yew may be exhibiting normal seasonal needle drop.  That's likely the case if the inner most needles are turning yellow and dropping while outermost needles remain green.
