Western Cherry fruit flies? #873355

Asked June 16, 2024, 6:47 PM EDT

Hello! Apparently I'm not supposed to give any person info here but I will say that I live in Umatilla Oregon just so you know I'm a local hahaha. Anyway I have a cherry tree that's about 8 or 9 years old and the past two years I've had little maggots (larvae) in the ripened fruit. Through a little research I've come to the layman conclusion that what I'm dealing with is Western Cherry fruit flies. The larvae fit the description (white, about the size of long rice and inside the fruit with zero evidence of damage to the fruit itself). I've also seen flies with black and white stripes on the tree itself which seems to fit the bill of the mature fly. Perhaps I'm incorrect and had I been home I would have included some pictures but unfortunately I'm not there at the moment. I can get you some at a later time if you're willing to give some advice. Anyway I'm pretty sure this year's crop is doomed, but I was curious if you have any experience dealing with these guys? If so what course of action should I take to prevent them from coming back next year or spreading to neighbors and possibly small local orchards? From what I have read the larvae come out of the fruit and burrow into the ground over winter then in the spring come out and mature into flies that then mate and lay eggs just under the skin of the fruit but only after the fruit has gotten to a semi soft stage in development? I read that it is that short window when the flies come from the soil and start mating that control is most effective, but I'm unsure what measures to implement and the exact method to do so? Anyway I'm sure I've written enough for you to get an idea what I'm dealing with and hopefully you can guide me into some control or better yet elimination of these little rascals. Thank you and God bless! D. M.

Oregon has been reporting that the adult flies have been showing up last week and this week.
I hope you find this helpful!
