Pink leafhopper #873354

Asked June 16, 2024, 6:43 PM EDT

Just noticed a pink leafhopper on my blueberry bush which is in a pot on my deck in Takoma Park. Is it harmful? If so, what should I do? Thank you!

Expert Response

This appears to be a leafhopper in the genus Gyponana. They are not considered a significant pest of blueberries. Leafhoppers feed on plant sap and can cause damage to some plants if they are present in high numbers. There are natural predators like ants, spiders, and ladybugs that actively kill leafhoppers. Your plant looks very healthy, and there is nothing you need to do if there is only one leafhopper. Keep an eye on your plant, and reach out if you notice any unusual symptoms on the leaves. Some of the most important things for keeping blueberries healthy are maintaining good soil quality (pH in the 4.5-5.5 range) and avoiding drought stress.
