Pollinator Houses #873353

Asked June 16, 2024, 6:35 PM EDT

I live in Portland in Multnomah County next to a busy street. Can I build a pollinator house in my small front yard, or a little bee house for them to be safe and chill? Thanks!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Dirk.  I am uncertain what type of bees and other pollinators you are wanting to build a structure for.  The only bee species for which humans devote much energy are for honey bees (hives) and Mason bees (Mason bee houses).  Native bee species live in native spaces, and don't need humans' help.  You can read about ways you can help pollinators in this article:

So, street side landscapes can contain a healthy mixture of plants and habitat needed for pollinators.  Good luck!
