Grasshoppers in the vegetable garden. #873324

Asked June 16, 2024, 2:50 PM EDT

Hello! Last year the grasshoppers decimated my garden, and I'm hoping to figure out a way to avoid that happening this year as well. I think I just saw the first little nymphs today. I want some way to manage them that isn't massively detrimental to the beneficial insects around. I know there used to be a bait available with Nosema locustae that targeted grasshoppers and some crickets, but it looks like it is no longer available anywhere because of production issues. I've also heard of some people using mantids in their gardens, and I've seen a lot of sources saying that they cannot survive the winters here in MN but I don't know how much that is changing with the climate, and also they are apparently pretty non-discretionary in what insects they kill and consume. Are there other options I can use? I'm hoping that the wet early summer here will keep down their populations but I also want to be prepared for the worst.
