We have 2 maple trees. Both look like this- quite suddenly. Help!

Frederick County Maryland

Expert Response

This is probably Maple Anthracnose, a very common but minor fungal infection, or another type of leaf spot disease, which is also inconsequential. It can be alarming in a year with heavy infection (generally after a wet spring) as leaves become "burnt"-looking and may shed, but that is typical for such diseases and in fact, little harm to the tree is done, and new leaves should eventually replace those that were shed. If you suspect there is an overlapping issue and the tree appears to be in decline (not having a fully-leafy canopy, where branches were dying back before the present disease cycle), then we recommend that you have it evaluated by a certified arborist. Arborists can't treat or cure every condition, but they can help make a diagnosis and can also look for sources of tree stress that might be able to be alleviated.
