Ground cover at base of black cherry tree #873289
Asked June 16, 2024, 12:05 AM EDT
I have a mature black cherry tree in my backyard that currently has landscape rocks around the tree base (extends 3 to 5 feet away from the tree base). I would like to remove the rocks and replace with ground cover that will help protect the tree roots. Would mulch, grass or another type of ground cover be best for the tree?

Expert Response
Zak, Removing that rock mulch is a great idea. The research shows that a ground cover or wood chip mulch will be much better for the tree. Choose a ground cover to your liking - vinca minor, sweet woodruff, or Japanese spurge are three that I have under trees.
