Varroa treatments #873265

Asked June 15, 2024, 5:31 PM EDT

Hello, Would you recommend using 1/2 dose MAQS on spring splits and nucs at this time or is it too strong for those weaker hives? In the past I’ve only used hopguard for new nucs. Thanks!

Expert Response

Hello,

HopGuard III is a more appropriate varroa mite treatment for nucs and small splits than formic acid treatments like Mite Away Quick Strips and Formic Pro.

Here is information on applying Mite Away Quick Strips from its manufacturer, NOD: https://nodglobal.com/mite-away-quick-strips-application/.

Here is Mite Away Quick Strips's USA label: https://nodglobal.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Mite-Away-Labels-US.pdf. As you'll see, there isn't a "half treatment" option:

OPTION ONE: 2 STRIPS (7 DAY TREATMENT)

OPTION TWO: 1 STRIP AT DAY+0, 1 STRIP AT DAY+14 (21 DAY TREATMENT)

The Mite Away Quick Strips label states, "The colony should be a minimum of 10,000 bees, covering approximately six 9” deep frames."

HopGuard III's label states you can use 1 strip for 1-5 frames of bees: https://www3.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/ppls/<personal data hidden>1-20200603.pdf.

Happy beekeeping!
