Is this maple tree done? #873258

Asked June 15, 2024, 4:44 PM EDT

What is your opinion on the large maple tree growing on the edge of a hill to a ravine? At four feet above the ground the trunk is 56 3/4" around. On the ravine side there are not as many branches. Leaves are thinner and are drooping. I am able to probe at least six inches at the top of the bad side of the trunk. It is very punky. At the bottom of the opening is pretty hollow. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Expert Response

Hello Robert,
That kind of assessment is beyond the scope of our online format.
The presence of rot in the trunk and thinning crown indicate the tree needs to be assessed on site by a certified arborist with a specialty in risk assessment. These certified professionals have been specially educated and passed certification tests.
The International Society of Arboriculture has a website where you can search for ones in your area by zip code. Be sure to select one who lists “Tree Risk Assessment” in his/her qualifications.
