The presence of rot in the trunk and thinning crown indicate the tree needs to be assessed on site by a certified arborist with a specialty in risk assessment. These certified professionals have been specially educated and passed certification tests.
The International Society of Arboriculture has a website where you can search for ones in your area by zip code. Be sure to select one who lists “Tree Risk Assessment” in his/her qualifications.
