Peony planting in Chelsea, MI #873246

Asked June 15, 2024, 3:35 PM EDT

I need help planting four peony plants in my yard. We have clay soil and I am unable to plant them myself. They are in containers and need to be planted soon. I hope you can recommend someone who can help. Thank you.

Good evening Julie,

MSU Extension provides education resources. We do not endorse or recommend retailers or brands, and so we don’t maintain a list of retailers/gardeners.

Here are some resources you can search for services:

Michigan Green Industry Assoc.

https://www.landscape.org

The MNLA website-

Check local publications, such as newspapers and magazines like The Michigan Gardener, available at libraries, and sometimes online.

Check with your local garden clubs, who may have recommendations-

I also found a link for Chelsea’s Garden Club:

I’ve also included a like for A Southern Gardener. They're based in Grosse Pointe Park, & I’m not sure what their radius in, but you could contact them & ask:

Good luck & have a great day!

Thank you, Carrie. Do you think we could plant the peony in large raised beds with rich soil?

Hi Julie,

Here are a couple links for peonies that mention raised beds:

https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/peonies-for-the-home-landscape

It is surprising how little info there is on raised beds for peonies, but the fact that they don’t like their roots disturbed is probably why not many folks plant them that way. These links mention getting around poorly draining soils, so I’m sure you can successfully plant them in raised beds.

Good luck!
